Merkel cell polyomavirus and extrapulmonary small cell carcinoma
The Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCV) is involved in the development of up to 100% of Merkel cell cancer (MCC) cases. Early studies have reported that the virus was infrequently detected in other small cell or neuroendocrine lung carcinomas, which share histological features with MCC. The present study investigated the presence of MCV in cases of extrapulmonary small cell carcinoma (ESCC), which a...
متن کاملMerkel cell polyomavirus and cutaneous Merkel cell carcinoma
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare aggressive neuroendocrine skin cancer of elderly patients. Generally, it originates from Merkel cells of the basal layer of the epidermis characterized by typical neuroendocrine granules (neuron-specific enolase; NSE+) and keratin filament (cytokeratin-20; CK20). Its incidence has been increasing in the last two decades, likely because of improved ability t...

These findings contradict existing evidence showing MCV sT protein expression in MCVMCC cancer tissues (Shuda et al., 2011) and cell lines (see Figure. 2, Houben et al., 2010) (Guastafierro et al., 2013). To investigate this discrepancy, we tried replicating Angermeyer et al's results using the same antibodies to detect MCV sT (CM8E6 (Kwunet al., 2009), CM5E1 (Shuda et al., 2011) and 2T2 ((Wang...
متن کاملMerkel Cell Polyomavirus Strains in Patients with Merkel Cell Carcinoma
We investigated whether Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) patients in France carry Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) and then identified strain variations. All frozen MCC specimens and 45% of formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded specimens, but none of the non-MCC neuroendocrine carcinomas specimens, had MCPyV. Strains from France and the United States were similar.
